The Visitor Information Centre is located a few doors away, where staff can provide you with information about local attractions such as the Court House in which Ned Kelly was committed to stand trial, the sound and light show at the Beechworth Powder Magazine, and the heritage-listed botanic gardens at the former May Day Hills Asylum. Staff will also help you book for Historic Precinct and old Beechworth Gaol tours, as well as Beechworth's famous ghost tours.

Getting to Beechworth
Beechworth is around three and half hours from Melbourne, seven hours from Sydney and Canberra is four and half hours via the Hume Freeway by car. Regular domestic flights operate into Albury airport, which offers hire car, taxi and bus services.
A Train to Beechworth is available from Melbourne (taking approximately 3 ½ hours from Southern Cross station). You may get a train direct to Wangaratta and connecting buses are able to pick you up and take you to Beechworth. The bus stop in Beechworth is just around the corner from Freeman on Ford in Camp Street. Please ring V Line on 136 196 or go to www.vline.com.au to view the timetable. If you leave Melbourne around 8.15am you will usually arrive in Beechworth approximately 12.10pm if there is a connecting bus straight to Beechworth. Return trains go back most days to Melbourne.
Beechworth is a treasure trove of natural beauty. View here photos of the gorge area in the National Historic Park. You can take about an hour's walk or a 15 minute car drive to view some of the natural water holes/falls and to view the amazing rock bolders. Some of these rock bolders used to house aboriginal living areas. If you are fortunate enough to walk early around this natural setting, or at dusk, you may see wallabies and other wild life.
Beechworth has an amazing bike track which is a 200 km sealed former railway line. Please see photos below of the bike track. One can hire bicycles in town or use the ones at Freeman on Ford. We currently have 3 mountain bikes and one racing bike for guests to use free of charge with helmets.
Day Trips From Beechworth
- Explore nearby Stanley, with apples, nuts and berries on sale in season and then visit historic Yackandandah.
- Drive to historic Yackandandah and on to scenic Mt Beauty via the small township of Dederang. Lunch in Bright and return home via Myrtleford, stopping for a wine tasting at Gapsted Winery.
- Explore Chiltern and the Rutherglen Wine Region with over 17 wineries open for tasting and numerous lunch time options.
- Visit Tarrawingee on your way to Wangaratta where you can enjoy a movie or ten pin bowling. Then on to Eldorado rich in history, continue on to the magic views of Woolshed Falls.
- Enjoy the food and wine of the King Valley and Milawa gourmet region.
